It's a Wrap

BarCamp Doylestown was an amazing success.  If you have not been watching on Twitter, that is where the buzz has been.  Search the hashtag #barcamp18901 to view the converstion and then step in.

To make it a little easier, we have pulled together an initial set of links and posted them here on our wiki.  You can see it here: http://bit.ly/bc18901

Please use this valuable resource and make it even better.  Edit the wiki page to add any content you want.  Did you write a blog post?  Is it listed?  Do you have material you want to add from the sessions?  Do you have examples that would help?

Please go for it and edit the wiki.  It is just like a virtual "white board" that we can all edit to keep it current with the coverage of the event.

Already many are asking, "When are we going to do it again?"  Well, let's ask you the same question.  This event was organized by the crowd for the crowd, so let us know when we will be doing it again.

Ready, Set, #Barcamp18901

1.   Review your registration information to make sure it is accurate by reviewing the attendee list on the "Who's Coming" link at the left of this page. We update the list often, so check the "Who's Coming" for the most recent list.  If for any reason you are not able to attend, you can cancel your registration by simply sending an  email. That will let others who are on the wait list have an opportunity to participate.

2.   Vote – Look at topics that have been proposed and help determine what will be covered in the 15 or so sessions at BarCamp. More than 50 people have suggested topics they’d like to present. You can review the list of topics here and then you can vote on which topics most interest you by going to our Votazz site provided by AppFusions. Sign up by creating your user ID and password, and entering the email address you used to register for BarCamp. Please note that Votazz is currently in pre-release and we are using this with a pioneering spirit in mind! You may get an error upon registration, but if at first you don’t succeed –  try, try again! (We recommend signing in to Votazz using a PC with Firefox if available.)

The vote will be published here.  Then during the first 1/2 hour of the BarCamp, we will finalize selection of sessions.

3.   Show up – Registration opens and networking begins at 5:30, and we’ll get started at 6:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 127 E. State St., Doylestown, PA. There will be adequate, free on-street parking on State Street and other nearby streets after 5:00 p.m. We will have complimentary light sandwiches and finger foods, complimentary soft drinks, and a cash bar.

4.   Be Comfortable - This is a casual event.  Come as you are comfortable:  Casual, Business Casual, and Business Attire are all acceptable, based on your personal preference.

If you have any questions leading up the event, hit us up on twitter @BCDoylestown or email us BCDoylestown@gmail.com

See you soon!

Barcamp Doylestown is a "Sellout"

September 7, 2010

Barcamp Doylestown “sold out” today with attendee registration no. 160.  If you have registered already, great, we look forward to seeing you.  If you have not yet, you can still put your name on our wait list and we’ll see if we have space.  We thought when we got a facility that could handle a potential crowd of 200, we would be lucky to get 40 or so to come out.  Maybe 60 if it were a stretch.  Well, you’ve responded beyond our wildest imagination.  The facility asked us to cap the attendee list at 140, so we listened and took it to 160.

Some of the more veteran organizers are not at all surprised with this fantastic turnout.  It’s amazing how calm they are as we make the final preparations to host the event.

We’ve got people coming from all around the area.  Here are a few graphics to express where the crowd is coming from.  The bigger the word, the more often the city showed up in our registration list.

Where_are_you_from

We also had a little fun putting the same concept to music in this video, destined to be a local viral hit.

Eventbrite let us do it, so we decided to show a picture of the IP address geographic distribution of registrants. I didn't show the one from Africa (not sure he's really going to make it), but the others all came from Doylestown and surrounding areas (with the exception of a few out-of-towners visiting us from Houston)

Where_from_map

This event is not just about the topics, but more about the people you will meet.  Each one is somehow engaged in social business, ranging from interested beginner to experienced and field hardened professional.  They come from all walks of life and all sizes of companies.  We have the expected entrepreneurs from growing local firms, looking for a chance to network and learn.  We have mid market companies who’s names probably won’t surprise you.  And we have representatives from many of the largest companies in the area and outside: Pfizer, Vanguard, Alcatel-Lucent, Merck, NASA, United Business Media, Nutrisystem, Amgen, Kraft Foods, and Johnson & Johnson.

Since it is an unconference, we don’t really want to highlight any individual attendee names.  It’s all about each individual who is coming and it is a very level playing field.  In fact to have some fun, we collected an interesting fact from each attendee as they registered.  I thought it would be fun to list some of them here.

So, here is a sampling of the responses to the request:

“Please give us one interesting fact about yourself”

There are many more, but you’ll just have to come out to Barcamp Doylestown to hear the stories.  So there you have it.  The un-conference is ready to go.  The sponsors are lined up, the facility is ready, the presenters are thinking about their presentations, and the crowd is pumped.

We’ll see you on the 20th!  Come early.

BarCamp Doylestown – Emerging Social Business

Where Business, Social and Technology Meet

What is BarCamp Doylestown?

Unconference: It is an open, participatory workshop with content developed and provided by participants. Everyone who attends – from novice to grizzled veteran – is on equal footing to suggest topics, lead discussions, ask questions, offer presentations, and explore pertinent topics together.

Moose_small

Social Business: The theme is “Emerging Social Business,” by which we mean the relationships people are developing and information they are sharing with each other through open networks such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, blogs, Wikipedia, etc., as well as proprietary corporate networks like intranets. It is about business and technology helping to facilitate social networks.

Logistics: This event is FREE to all who register, while tickets last. It will be held 6:00-9:00 p.m., Monday, September 20, at the Moose Lodge, 127 E. State Street, Doylestown PA. Register here on Eventbrite. Exact topics will be determined during the first 30 minutes of the conference. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

What will I get out of it?

Ideas: Everyone who comes will share their ideas, hear ideas from others and perhaps even come up with some new ones on the fly. It is a great opportunity to expand your perspective on what social business can do for you.

Stimulation: With more than a hundred people from various walks of life, discussions are sure to get your juices flowing. You will leave with more energy and enthusiasm, charged up to put your ideas into action.

Connections: You will meet amazing people at BarCamp! You may find yourself networking with dozens of people, or perhaps just one or two. You will make connections that will pay dividends beyond this event, so be sure to bring your business cards.

What can I put into it?

Collaboration: Because Barcamp is all about participation, your collaboration is essential. What ideas do you have? What can you share? Do you have a business challenge you’d like advice on?  Can you host a session, lead a discussion, or provide a brief formal presentation on a topic of interest? You can contribute your ideas or sign up to present on our wiki . If you or your company would like to be a sponsor to help cover modest costs for the event, please email BCDoylestown@gmail.com

Perspective: We all bring various points of view to our work. So prepare for the event by reading up on social business, talking with co-workers, or testing platforms. Your experience and point of view are valuable.

Helping Others: Come with the perspective that “what comes around, goes around.” Pay it forward, pay it backward – but please come with a mind to help others learn and succeed. We look forward to seeing you there!

BarCamp Doylestown - Who and What

Bcorganizers
A little about the organizers, their passions and topics swirling

Barry Dalton

Dalton1

What do you do?

A lot of things I probably shouldn't be doing.  My main source of cash flow comes from running a IT organization for a mid sized customer service BPO focused on Consumer Packaged Goods and Pharma industries.

What do you wish you did?

Had enough money that if I gave it away, I could make a real difference; while writing and playing music all day and passing that gift along to my kids

Have you ever been to a BarCamp before? If so, which one(s)?

No. So really jazzed about having the opportunity to make this my first.

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

The customer of the future: He rules! (literally).

The great people I've met and things I've learned so far in my social media sojourn

Give us one interesting fact about yourself!

I spent much of my formative years either in hip waders, trudging through swamps recording bird calls (I have a degree in Zoology) or sleeping in a van between dive bar gigs trying to "make it" as a musician.

Got a website or blog?

What do you do?

I am principal of Your Marketing Exec, LLC, a strategic marketing consulting
firm. I also teach people how to use social media to meet their business
needs. I am writing a book, "Dynamic Organizational Marketing: Engaging your
employees and customers in your marketing mission."

What do you wish you did?

I wish I could spend all my time writing fiction, and tasting and reviewing
wines from all over the world.

Have you ever been to a BarCamp before? If so, which one(s)?

I have been to TrendCamp and Marketing Camp, where I attended some great
sessions and led/presented at three sessions: "The Evolution of Marketing,"
"Dynamic Organizational Marketing" and "A Simple Approach to Telling Your
Story."

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

"Engaging Your Employees & Customers through Social Business" or "The
Marketer Is Dead! Long Live Marketing!"

Give us one interesting fact about yourself!

For graduate school, I selected the Master of Science in Organizational
Dynamics program at the University of Pennsylvania over MBA programs because
I believe that business is really about the evolving quest to connect and
activate people -- not quantitative analysis and outdated management
philosophies.

Got a website or blog?

What do you do?

Corporate Web Technical Project Manager by day and social change agent on nights and weekends.

What do you wish you did?

I am doing it. I have been a self employed consultant for over 20 years so I guess I have found my niche. If I did not need to work I would be an student of ancient history.

Have you ever been to a BarCamp before? If so, which one(s)?

Yes and organized a few. Barcampphilly.org, Trendcamp.org, Healthcampphila.org, and currently working on urbanfarmcamp.org.( would love your help)

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

Working title: Your smartphone will be your next credit card. How Smart devices are changing payment options.

I'm the director of influencer management for Alcatel-Lucent's global developer strategy (which, in a nutshell, translates to using the knowledge and experience I've accumulated over a 20-year PR career to connect the world of telecommunications with the fast-paced world of application development).

What do you wish you did?

This one's easy: National Geographic photographer. I've had a love of photography since I can remember (thanks Dad!) and National Geographic is the pinnacle for any photographer. Plus, the travel and adventure wouldn't be too shabby either.

Have you ever been to a BarCamp before? If so, which one(s)?

I've participated in ReadWriteWeb's unconference and GlueCon's cloud computing bar camp. I've also helped promote various cloud computing bar camps.

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

The harsh realities of what it takes to engage in social media -- and the benefits that go along with jumping in with both feet.

What do you do?

IT Management - CRM/Data Integration.
I like to tinker.  Ex: One little gizmo I played around with brought the first commercially viable B2B content to the PDA.  It was a Sharp Zaurus and the year was 1996.  I used dialup connectivity to an IBM VTAM/CICS Mainframe for Dun & Bradstreet Business Information Reports.  I also enabled Microsoft Outlook email to the PDA using a client/server POP.  The unit had a blinding 2400 baud sidecar modem, 2MB of RAM, 10.9 oz weight and could just squeeze in to your suit breast pocket.  It could have stopped a bullet.  We have come a long way since then!

What do you wish you did?

Developing Social altruism.

Have you ever been to a BarCamp before? If so, which one(s)?

Yes.  Various BarCamps in Philadelphia and NYC. BarCampPhilly.org, TrendCamp.org, Philly Startup Leaders, #140Conf NYC

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

Building a Winning Business Culture (ala Zappos) using Social Knowledge Platforms and Adoption

What do you do?

I am currently responsible for strategic development and growth of social media, community and member programs at Nutrisystem. I have been immersed in emerging technologies since 1996 when I took my first "dotcom" job back in the early days of the web at 4anything.com and have since worked in various capacities from marketing to relationship management in financial services, user experience design, non-profit and other organizations.

What do you wish you did?

I wish I could write and promote via social media for fun and profit while immersing myself in developing my skills as a photographer. I dabble in all of these things (two blogs, one for fun and one for social media, and a growing body of photography work as yet unpublished anywhere but online), but alas, one needs to make a living.

Have you ever been to a BarCamp before? If so, which one(s)?

I have not yet been to a BarCamp! This will be my first and I'm very much looking forward to it. I have quite a bit to contribute but no doubt even more to learn.

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

I would be delighted to lead one or both of the following sessions: Social Media Strategy: Step by Step (as most people find laying out strategy daunting enough to skip to the tactics, I find that the ground I've laid here can help people plan before they find themselves immersed in unintended consequences) and Social Media Evangelism (as I've done quite a bit of this in the last few years, convincing people to spend time and resources - and money - in as yet unproven channels).

Give us one interesting fact about yourself!

My background is in Psychology and Education. I used to teach 4th grade in Philadelphia and find that what I had to learn to do that effectively has been useful in every other job and avocation I have ever had.

Got a website or blog?

Have you ever been to a BarCamp before? If so, which one(s)?

I went to a bar at a camp once. Wait, what was the question?

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

Developing a Social Media/Online Marketing strategy.

Give us one interesting fact about yourself!

I was in 5 major car accidents in 10 years and walked away with nothing more than a few cuts and bruises every time. No shenanigans on my end; got hit by others morons. btw; anyone want to carpool to the event?

Announcing BarCamp Doylestown - Emerging Social Business

Come to Doylestown on September 20, 2010 6pm for an Un-Conference on the hot topic of Emerging Social Business.  What is an Un-Conference, you say? Well, it's like nothing else you've ever attended (unless of course you are a BarCamp veteran).  Think “tweetup” with a purpose.  Sign Up Here

The concept comes from several ideas and has been gaining ground virally for the past few years all over the world.  When you attend a regular conference, so many say that the best conversations come from the bar or the reception afterwards.  Gettting smart people together to talk about subjects they are passionate about is always fun and enlightening.  Add some structure and a few more smart people, and you have a conference of your own, run by the crowd, and enjoyed by the crowd.

Here is how it works.  A small group gets together and decides to organize a BarCamp (see http://barcamp.org).  There is very little planning other than getting the venue, lining up some sponsors to cover the costs, and thinking through the main topics.  At the event itself, the crowd gathers and organizes their thoughts around a white-board.  We will set up a 4x3 grid of topics, choose leaders, decide what breakouts we want to attend and get to it.  For the next 2 hours, we will have 3 forty minute periods of 4 simultaneous sessions on various topics around emerging social business.

Now, we have given it a little thought and have some ideas who will lead each breakout, but nothing is set hard and fast.  The topics will be discussed and finalized within the first ½ hour.  After that the sessions begin.  If you find yourself in a “yawn” of a session or want to check out what is going on in one of the other ones, you vote with your feet and move on.  It’s that simple, It’s free, and you will walk away learning something new and meeting some sharp people who share your passion.

This is what we are currently thinking, but as we get closer to the event, you can help us shape it, by editing our plannng wiki http:/bit.ly/BCDoylestown

Topic: Emerging Social Business

Potential Sub Topics:

  1. Exploring best practices in Social CRM
  2. Emerging inexpensive or free technologies / offerings
  3. Selling it / adoption ideas / making it viral Personal (consumer) productivity tools / processes
  4. Location Based Services (best practices and how can businesses better leverage them)
  5. What's the plan? You can't achieve your goals without strategy. You can’t develop a strategy if you don't know your goals.
  6. Where can a business get value?
  7. Exploring best practices in Enterprise 2.0
  8. Industry specific opportunities (Big Pharma, Small businesses, others?)
  9. Pharma: Real risk of exposure to AEs (Adverse Event notifications) in Social Media Engagements
  10. The Match Game: connecting the mobile patient (consumer) with the mobile Health Care Providers

So get at it and sign up now.  Did I mention it is free?  Yes, it’s free, but you must sign up so we can have a good idea of the count.

Promote it to your friends on Facebook, twitter ( #BarCamp18901 ), email, even mention it in a phone call.  "Bring Your Thought Leader" to BarCamp Doylestown on September 20, 2010.
